Check how to prepare for medical tests performed in the TU Zdrowie’s network of medical facilities
Find out what is advised prior taking particular diagnostic tests. Following these simple instructions will ensure that the tests are performed without any complications and delays, and most importantly, the results will be most reliable.
The following information is valid only during the pandemic:
- Wear a mask without metal any components, bring a pair of disposable gloves
Preparation for medical tests

- Wash the tested body part with soap and water.
- Do not apply any creams, emulsions, lotions, etc. on the tested body part.
- Prior to the test you may eat as usual.
- Inform the doctor conducting the test if you take anti-clotting medications.
- If you have any metal objects in your body inform the doctor prior to the test.

- The test should be taken on an empty stomach or at least after 6 hours of fasting prior.
- Bring the referral issued by your doctor with stated type of stimulus that is to be applied.
- Bring your current audiometric test results
- 4 days prior the test stop taking medications treating dizziness, sleeping pills and sedatives.
- If you take medications prescribed by a psychiatrist, follow your psychiatrist’s instructions in the process of coming off the medications.
- It is advised to arrive with an accompanying person.

- Within 24 hours prior the examination do not take drugs acting on the central nervous system (speeding it up or slowing down).
- Take your usual medications unless instructed otherwise by your doctor.
- Do not drink any alcoholic beverages or containing caffeine
- Wash your hair before the examination
- Do not use hair styling sprays, gels and creams.
- Eat a meal before the examination.

- You do not need to be on an empty stomach for the examination.
- Take your usual medications.
- Having been injected radioisotope, drink 1-2 litres of beverages in order to speed up the process of washing out the radiotracer from tissues other than bone, which allows to get a clearer image of the bones. Additionally, it reduces patients exposure, as the unbound in the bones radiotracer is removed with urine by the urinary tract.

- You do not need to be on an empty stomach for the examination.
- 4 hours prior to the examination do not take calcium supplements (other medications should be taken as usual).
- Do not wear any metal objects (e.g. zippers, buttons, jewellery).
- The following bone densitometry examination should be done on the same machine, as it increases the accuracy of the results.

- Collect the first morning urine sample.
- Urine should be collected in a disposable sterile container (available in any pharmacy).
- Before taking the sample, thoroughly wash the urethral region with a warm water and soap, do not use disinfectants.
- Once you have started to urinate, collect a mid-stream urine sample, this means you do not collect the first or the last part of urine that comes out as it may be contaminated with bacteria present on the mucous membrane, you collect it in the middle of urination.
- Small children’s urine is collected into bags
- The sample needs to be delivered to the laboratory as soon as possible.

- For the general urine test take a morning urine sample, i.e. urine after an overnight rest to a clean disposable container (available in pharmacies). Write your full name on the container.
- Avoid testing during menstrual bleeding.

- In order for the blood tests to be reliable, your last meal should be eaten in the evening the day prior to your test. Do not drink in the morning before the test (especially sweet drinks and coffee), as it may cause inaccurate results. Food eaten before the test will change the levels of glucose, lipid and protein components, as well as other parameters.
- Medications – take your usual medications (with small amount of water), unless your doctor recommends otherwise.

- On the day of the procedure, refrain from eating (arrive on an empty stomach). It is allowed to drink still water.
- 7 days prior colonoscopy procedure stop taking any iron formulations. Do not eat fruit that contain stones or pips, bread with seeds, muesli, linen seeds, poppy seeds, etc. It is not advised to eat beetroot, as it may discolour the intestinal mucosa. If you are diabetic, you should contact your doctor in order to prepare an individual plan before the procedure.
- 3 days prior colonoscopy start a liquid diet. Your main food should be yoghurts, thin soups, easily digestible products and large amounts of still water.
- A day prior the examination you should take a day off from work. The doctor referring you for the procedure would have prescribed you a laxative, that should be taken in the prescribed doses throughout the day. Drink plenty of fluids, approx. 3 litres.

- Do not eat 8 hours prior the procedure.
- Do not drink, smoke or chew gum 4 hours prior the examination.
- If you have prescribed medication for example for high blood pressure, cardiac disease, epilepsy, take your daily dose with small amount of water.

- The examination does not require any special preparation.
- The exceptions are transabdominal examinations of renal arteries, abdominal aorta, celiac artery, hepatic veins, IVC, iliac veins – in these cases see the preparation for abdominal ultrasound

- For the transabdominal ultrasound of the female reproductive system, the prostate gland and of the bladder, the bladder should be full.
- A day prior the ultrasound your diet should be easily digestible. Avoid fruit, vegetables, and wholegrain bread.
- If you suffer from obesity, please take medication that reduces bloating (e.g. Espumisan 2 capsules 3 times a day). It will help release the air stored in the digestive system that causes distortion of the ultrasound image.
- 6 hours prior the examination do not eat, smoke and chew gum.
- 2 hours prior the examination drink 1-1,5L of still water and refrain from emptying the bladder.
- Bring any previous ultrasound images that you may have.

Do not eat for at least 6 hours, drinking small amounts of still water in small portions is acceptable, however avoid swallowing large amounts of air at the same time.

Do not chew gum or smoke cigarettes.

The creatinine blood test is valid for a month if there are no indications of kidneys dysfunctions, otherwise the test needs to be retaken within 7 day prior CT/MRI.

In case of head exam: remove make-up, do not use any cosmetics

In case of abdomen and pelvis exam: avoid eating for 4 hour prior the exam

Having been administered the contrast, drink more neutral liquids (1,5-2L) within 48 hours after the exam
