Free checkups at the “NEUCA dla Zdrowia” Foundation cardiobus
The “NEUCA dla Zdrowia” Foundation’s cardiobus has once again embarked on a tour, during which it will pay a visit to nearly 40 towns and cities across the country. Until the end of June, in each place the cardiobus will stop, visitors will be able to take a free cardiological check-up and measure their blood sugar levels. The “NEUCA dla Zdrowia” Foundation’s campaign has been joined by TU Zdrowie, which is also inviting its customers to take part in preventive care for cardiovascular diseases.
Cardiovascular diseases are the most common cause of premature death in Poland and, along with diabetes, are considered a 21st century epidemic. The cardiobus of the “NEUCA dla Zdrowia” Foundation offers free and safe screenings to prevent these diseases.
“In the cardiobus, each patient can have an ECG test, blood pressure measurement and, if overweight, a BMI test. The ECG test is particularly recommended for people with hypertension and cardiovascular diseases such as atherosclerosis or after a heart attack. It is necessary in the case of alarming symptoms, that is, chest pain, shortness of breath and dizziness. These symptoms may indicate the risk of post-Covid cardiovascular disease. Myocardial infarction is one of the three most common post-COVID-19 cardiac complications, the other two being heart failure and cardiac arrhythmias. For this reason, the Polish Cardiac Society urges people to monitor their health, even when they are recovered or vaccinated. This also applies to young people,” – says Boguslawa Golus-Jankowska, President of the “NEUCA dla Zdrowia” Foundation.
Although myocardial infarction is more often attributed to men, the issue also affects young and active women. About 250 women in Poland die of heart disease every day, and one in three deaths is caused by a heart attack. In 2016, 93,000 women died from cardiovascular diseases, accounting for 51 percent of all their deaths. The statistics are more alarming every year.
“In addition, at the cardiobus, we allow patients to measure their blood sugar levels themselves. The correctness of the test is supervised by staff who provide instruction and safe conditions for doing so. This is important because diabetes is a global phenomenon today. The International Diabetes Federation (IDF) estimates that one in ten adults worldwide is currently living with diabetes, and 36% of Europeans don’t even know they have diabetes,” – adds the President of the “NEUCA dla Zdrowia” Foundation.
A report by the National Health Fund shows a 14% increase in the incidence of diabetes in adult Poles between 2013 and 2018, with 9.1% of the population in Poland suffering from diabetes. Insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome are also a threat as they significantly increase the risk of developing type 2 diabetes (3-6 times) and cardiovascular events and death regardless of cause (about 2 times). For this reason, the “NEUCA dla Zdrowia” Foundation has launched screenings of blood glucose levels.
